Publishing the Book of Mormon

Before we left Palmyra we stopped at Grandin Publishing in downtown Palmyra.  It is now owned and has been restored by the Church. 

When the work of translation was complete, Joseph made arrangements with Egbert B. Grandin to print the Book of Mormon.  A payment of $3,000 was required upfront to print 5,000 copies. The first copies were made available at the E.B. Grandin Bookstore on 26 March 1830 just a few weeks before the Church was organized on April 6, 1830. The books were sold for $1.35, which was approximately the wages of two days of work.

The printing business used 2-stories.  Here the printed and dries pages were put on pallets and lowered to the main floor.

Here's the typesetting room.  From start to finish, it was an interesting tour.  As a side note, Mr. Grandin and his wife never joined the Church.
