President Howard W. Hunter asked members of the Church to "establish the temple of the Lord as the great symbol of their membership and the supernal setting for their most sacred covenants. It would be the deepest desire of my heart to have every member of the Church temple worthy."
On the very property once owned by the Smith family, across the street from their humble log home and the Sacred Grove stands the majestic Palmyra temple. Besides the beauty of the setting and the life-saving ordinances performed there, the most prominent feature is the Angel Moroni. It seems so close you could reach out and touch it.
The story is told that President Hinckley was specific in his instructions to have a few clear windows in this temple so patrons can look out to the Sacred Grove. Most temple windows are stained glass or embellished as to block the view inside or out. Here are the clear windows at the back of the temple.
