Lombard's city celebration is Lilac Days. The crowning jewel of the May celebration is Lilacia Park located just across the street from the Metra Station. The tulips and lilacs are nothing short of spectacular. The eyes are delighted by the colors and varied heights of the tulips and the senses are invigorated with the scent of lilacs--every species you can think of.
We asked one of the docents if they planted tulips new each year. She said yes because they want to guarantee the height of the tulips. Some were double and looked almost like a peonie while others grew over a yard tall.
We strolled through the park over several days. Each time something new seemed to blossom or the lilacs were more pungent.
The rest of Illinois is lush and green right now. It makes me appreciate the early saints even more. They left the rich soils and green countryside to settle in a dry desert. Don't take my comment wrong--I think Utah is spectacular too, but with the canopy of hardwood trees and no need for sprinkler systems here, Illinois looks like the Garden of Eden.
