At midnight on Sunday, Feb. 10, the fire alarm went off in our 500-apartment complex. After bundling up in winter clothing and snatching the laptop, we joined the rest of our neighbors and their pets in the stairwell. This is a picture of the fire engine from our balcony. Three engines and two ambulances responded to the call. We ended up by the side door to the complex where the fire fighters were entering and exiting. One told us a water pipe had frozen and burst on the third floor. The next day a restoration company van was located near the 3rd floor entrance.
We spent a little more than 30 minutes in the stairwell. The funny part is one of the tenants had a really large cat with her. She tried covering the cat's ears but the poor thing just kept making a sorrowful, mad-sounding meow every three minutes. I kept waiting for the cat to freak out and make a dash for it.
One of the tenants used his blackberry to find out the temperature outside. It was -2 degrees. Welcome to weather in the Midwest and the joys of apartment living.

I'm so glad the apartment didn't burn down, but how "fun" to have some extra excitement for the night. I saw it was still freezing in Chicago. It was 50 here today and beautiful; it will be in Chicago too. Spring will be awesome!
