"Connecticut Potatoes"

The countryside is dotted with what appears to be stone fences.  The truth is they weren't intended to be fences at all.  Early settlers didn't know what to do with the rock they cleared while they were preparing the land for cultivation. They began stacking the rocks in rows that eventually became fences.  That's why they are called "Connecticut Potatoes".
